African Textile Workshop

For the last few weeks I have been preparing for my latest school workshop at Saint Benedict’s RC Primary School.  I am working with year 4 pupils to produce two textile wall hangings linked with their creative curriculum topic Kenya.
Inspiration Boards
The children have been learning about safari animals and looking at and recreating tribal patterns of their own, both of which are incorporated into the textile design. A range of techniques are being used including batik, fabric painting and appliqué.

Today was the first session working with the children, they made a good start, take a look at how they got on -

Microsoft Paint Contest

I am taking part in this . .
Artists AJ Garrett and Rebecca Little have launched a contest which they hope will see lots of people getting creative on Microsoft Paint. They will be running an exhibition at the Peg Powler Gallery in Stockton’s Dragon Studios displaying artworks created using Microsoft Paint. The best pictures will also be turned into a book of charity postcards.

MS Paint is something most people with PCs have access to but is rarely used now due to other more popular programs. They hope this will be a little bit of a revival for paint.

The pair came up with the project in association with The Big Draw 2012 – a world campaign to encourage drawing. If you fancy having a go then all you need to do is create a piece of art on MS Paint and email it to info@pegpowler.com

Happy New Year!

This is my first blog post of 2012, so I would like to start by wishing everyone a very happy new year! I hope it’s going to be a good one :-)
Work wise it looks as though 2012 is set to be a busy year. Here is the plan so far –
  • Continue with and complete my little sketchbook, ready to set off on the 2012 world tour. (Images will be following very soon)
  • Produce more work to sell, silk cushions, scarves etc. Products will be for sale through various outlets including ‘Designed Silver’. All details will be blogged!
  • Continue with my placement with Redana Studios. I am currently working with Andrea Freeman at Redana as part of a six month placement which I am absolutely loving. Redana creates bespoke clothing and accessories and is based North East of England. I have been working with Andrea to help design the prints for her first collections of scarves which are due to be launched throughout the year. Her brand spanking new website and blog are due to be launched next month, so watch this space for links to the sites. Exciting!
. . . . . I had best get cracking!!
